How to Make a Vertical Axis wind Turbine

Soon after my horizontal axis wind turbine project video went viral on YouTube I thought I should make another project on “make vertical axis wind turbine”. Without a doubt, it also got people’s attention. That’s when I realized how much people love Wind turbine projects.

In this blog post, I’m going to show you how did I make that project with materials that are locally available. To test that wind turbine I had to use a pedestal fan since there’s not much strong wind in my area. That attracted a lot of criticism.

Since I used a pedestal fan to generate the wind to test my wind turbine the trees and leaves behind it didn’t move. But the comments were like, look, there’s no wind for sure, he’s probably tricking us, that’s not a dynamo, that’s a motor that is turning the wind turbine.

But the truth is I really enjoyed those comments. Because I too was not satisfied with the output of that wind turbine project. I didn’t have an efficient dynamo, so the output was too not how much the wind turbine is designed to have.

Anyhow, currently I’m working on an efficient dynamo project and after that, I will make a giant wind turbine which makes a substantial amount of power to run a small house. And I’m planning to couple it with my existing off-grid solar power system. By the way, let’s get started with the project

How to make Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Sciencedirect explains the Vertical axis wind turbines this way. “Vertical axis wind turbines (or VAWTs) have the main rotor shaft arranged vertically. Key advantages of this arrangement are that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective. This is an advantage on sites where the wind direction is highly variable.”

The Propeller Making

You can use PVC pipe to make the vertical axis wind turbine propeller blades. Now we need a frame to fix those blades. I bought two rims of a cycle from Super hardware, my favorite hardware shop in my town. Then welded eight pieces of L clamps at a fixed distance. So that I can easily fix those PVC blades on it.

I think It doesn’t need an explanation. Just watch the video and proceed with your idea.

Fixing all Componets together

I bought few PVC end caps that connected them to both ends of the wind turbine blades. The next step is to connect the dynamo to the vertical axis wind turbine propeller. Actually, this is not a dynamo. It’s a DC motor I got a long time ago. So I’m not sure about its efficiency. That’s why I recommend you to go to my amazon store and buy a wind turbine dynamo. It will work well with this wind turbine.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Project is Ready

Our mini vertical axis wind turbine is ready for testing. Connect the dynamo and the propeller using a belt. Hurray. Ready to go. As soon as the wind blows, our wind turbine will start to rotate and the dynamo will begin to give electrical output. We can either use that electricity instantly to run a radio or tv, or you can store it in a battery for late use.

Thank you very much for taking your time to read my DIY vertical axis wind turbine project. It’s very pleasure to talk to a renewal energy enthusiast. Let’s build a better tomorrow. Be legendary. Speak your mind.

  2. Hi Man,
    A good start.
See 12V/24V/48V permanent magnet alternators are available from 35A to 220A capacities in the market. Normally used in four wheelers or AC Buses.
    You can take those alternators.
